In the 1990s, without explanation, people began manifesting uncanny supernatural powers. Several people used these newfound superpowers to exploit for personal gain, and the worst of them, The Black Gauntlet, built up a criminal empire under the guise of helping return society to its former state. It was all a ruse, as Black Gauntlet had an insane superiority complex, and sought to control the world with an iron fist. People with these powers (dubbed "MUTs" by the government) came to him for help, as they were a radically-oppressed minority among humans. Then, in the 2000s, power development doubled across the globe, leading to about 20% of the world's population developing some kind of hereditary or unforeseen meta power. This led to an increasingly painful societal regression, until the mid-2010s, when those seeking to do good with their powers, began to fight back against The Black Gauntlet's empire; among them rose a *new* kind of Hero, one that would finally make things a fair fight.
